A jamjar dressing room set in the patchwork Victorian city of Nusquamton - a city made of scattered pieces of various real and fictional cities.

Newcomers get pulled in from any manner of canon and situation, including the recently deceased, and they're invited to live for free in Mrs. Faraday's boarding house.

It's the sort of jamjar where characters can only travel so far out before space twists and turns them back towards the city, meaning people can live outside the city proper, in a variety of environments, but only as far out as the visible horizon... and the technology keeps to the candles and gaslight level, with only occasional magical or mechanized exceptions.

Papyrus was taken from after his death in a genocide run, giving him a second shot at life in this new world - where they get to live on the surface. Multiple timelines all meshed in together, and he considers them all family, but particularly looks out for same-timeline brother Sans (bonedoggle) and father Dr. W.D. Gaster (unvoidable)

Papyrus was going about his day-to-day life, in a happy life coexisting with humankind on the surface after Frisk (and Flowey) destroyed the barrier and freed them all... When a mysterious child appeared to him and warned him people were being kidnapped, across time and space, by a corporation leeching power out of them. It wasn't the kind of thing you expect to hear, ever, but it sounded... familiar, in a way like he'd been having dreams about, so Papyrus agreed to help them with the rescue mission.

And then it turned out Sans was among the kidnapped, transformed, amnesiac rock stars, and things got a lot more complicated.

Close to a year into his reign, King Papyrus had done his best to convince the people of the underground that they still had reason to hope, work hard, and go on living... even after the deaths and disappearances of Asgore, Undyne, Mettaton, Alphys, and all the human souls. It was lonely, smiling for others' benefits and rarely even confiding his brother anymore - now that Sans was working so hard on paperwork, keeping the kingdom going more steadily than Papyrus' morale-focused efforts could achieve, but he kept at it. Like he'd told the human's voicemail... He had to.

But one day, another human was discovered in the underground, and reported promptly to the king. The skeleton brothers had long since declared the rule that all humans would be given puzzles, and hopefully befriended... but the people of the underground had longer memories than that, and clamored at King Papyrus to take the human's soul, and continue what Asgore had begun.

Frightened and sick with the weight of responsibility, realizing that all his efforts had never brought this kind of hope or liveliness to the people, Papyrus retreated to the castle and dallied for some time in wishing he could be anywhere else. And a way to the carnival opened before him. He ventured out, saw the sights, talked with the Ringmaster... and made a deal. After a year and a day of labor, she would destroy the barrier, freeing monsterkind without any loss of life.

But, of course, it wasn't that simple. Not only was Sans already with the carnival, not only did the mysterious timeloops back home mean that the barrier wouldn't stay destroyed after Papyrus' deal went through... But the carnival was being chased by its old enemies, put through increasing peril before his contract was even up.

There was once a skeleton monster by the name of Papyrus, living in the underground kingdom of monsters sealed within a magic barrier, who held the Most Important Royal Position. That was literally the name of his position. It was a role with no authority and no responsibility, one he was given by his boss and mentor (and friend) when she became Empress, after the previous king was slain by a human child.

And then some terrible catastrophe struck, and they and all their world - underground monsters and surface humans alike- were all destroyed. Only shattered fragments of their world remained, when another living planet swept through to collect as many of the lingering souls as it could.

Russell Scordato, now, is a young British man born and raised in Moss Manor, a small town on the Mossgate River that people from our reality might not find on a map. He believed himself a regrettably ordinary person, regardless of his mum's enthusiasm about 'indigo children' and the like, and he aspired to more than that... mainly, through theatre. He spent his teenage years learning the craft, going away to university, hoping to Make It.

He didn't, and so in his early-20s he moved back to the Mossgate area to settle himself in the local community, the local theatre group, and reconnect with his family. And one spring, he dared to go on a tour of the local caverns, expecting to be spooked by the deep dark of it all. Instead, it all seemed... strangely familiar, and a number settled into his mind, one that he couldn't seem to forget. In time, it gave him access to a network of other people with strange numbers and stranger memories, a secret community of people changing from who they believed they were... to who those fragments of souls had once been.

To blend in, the Ringmaster transforms everyone into animals, cautions them to use only one of their powers, and to pretend to know nothing in order to blend in with the other Honorables. It turns out that Honorables are branded with hot iron (which burns and wounds those of fae heritage, like everyone in the carnival at this point) and given names by one of the twelve leaders. So Papyrus is now Yehudi, saber tooth tiger with Lilith's brand on his sternum and an ability for manipulating gravity & momentum... and they better all remember those names, or else get caught. ✪ S2:D79 ✪ ✪ -- ✪

Game: Aefenglom

☢ AEFENGLOM ☢

In some untold number of iterations of his life, a human travels through the underground, surviving the monsters through to the very end, and disappears through the barrier to leave a changed kingdom behind them.

In the timeline Papyrus hails from, the human spared most of the monsters... but some, they couldn't simply spare and didn't figure out how to avoid the attacks or run away safely, so they turned to violence. Enough perished at the human's hands that, when the ex-queen returned to claim the throne after the king's demise, the people refused the idea of friendship with humans.

Undyne, grieving the king not only as their leader but as her friend and mentor, led the revolt against the queen and personally evicted Toriel from the throne - and took control herself. Toriel returned peacefully to the Ruins, but this time she didn't barricade herself in to avoid her husband - she let some friends come to visit.

Papyrus, being a big fan of befriending the human, wholeheartedly joined his brother in visiting Toriel. He's gone on to learn lessons about parenting, cooking, and new hope for humans and monsters being friends... as long as they stay hidden back in the ruins, instead of going out into Undyne's warmongering underground. Thank goodness there's an old city in the ruins of Home, plenty of space to renovate.

Well, there was, until Papyrus touched a mirror and got pulled into a new world where he can't do magic and he's slowly turning into a werewolf.

Sometimes, slipping through a hole in the world and ending up a servant to powerful fae is a terrible culture shock. A realm where people are imprisoned for killed for open contempt? Life at the whims of a vain, powerful entity who shapes the world to reflect their image?

Luckily!!??!? It doesn't have to be a sudden shock! There's options for that.

For this Papyrus, the human regularly resorted to killing, whenever they felt too endangered. Many of the more powerful monsters were slain: Toriel for trying to trap them, Undyne for her clear killing intent, Asgore for his openly merciless fight. But Papyrus plainly didn't want to kill them... And Mettaton likewise lucked out: the robot's fight was late enough in the journey that the human was more resistant to hurt, Alphys' ongoing "support" of the human further bolstered their morale, and - mainly - his preoccupation with fame and performance rather reminded them of the skeleton, and convinced them to wait him out. Though he would be dragged away injured and unconscious, Alphys would rebuild him, and Mettaton would rise to take the throne in the wake of the human's destructive passage.

Alas, Papyrus would never be certain whether the human killed Undyne, or if she too was merely injured and unconscious - or perhaps embarrassed and in hiding - when she disappeared. But he knew that other people who openly disliked the celebrity-turned-ruler tended to disappear, amidst rumors of dust, and feared the possibilities... Though that didn't stop Papyrus from working for his favorite celebrity, living the be-suited and be-shadesed life as an agent and seeing to matters of PR and Mettaton's good humor.

No, in some ways, it doesn't have to be a sudden culture shock at all. And now, in a world where telling stories for favors is really a giving away of memories, sooner or later someone with no willingness to kill may find himself becoming a very, very different skeleton.

After the human went through the Underworld, slaughtering everyone they could and ultimately destroying the world... the skelebros woke up again, remembering everything that happened, but in strangely human bodies.
This idea was spawned from the Switcheroo event in FV and an AMA thread between my Papyrus and Greta's Sans, where we decided to explore that possibility. They've settled into life in the random un-named Canadian town, and since then discovered Gaster and Undyne again.

Other times, it's a kidnapping for the sake of saving the world.

It was the happy ending: the Underground kingdom of monsters, freed by the actions of the human Frisk... somehow. A commitment to not killing or being killed, winning the compassion and caring of monsters through the kingdom, convincing the king to stay his hand... and, also, a whole complicated thing involving six dead humans soul and one dead prince. The details were left vague, and everyone looked together to the future.

Turns out that problems like time loops, violent dissatisfaction, and impending annihilation at the hands of nihilist are problems on even larger scales than one barrier-entrapped monster kingdom. With the Hunger at large, and the Reclaimers of one world acting to prevent it by any means possible...

Well, a couple skeletons might get drafted for the job. Separately. Time being fluid between worlds, Sans would arrive with no expectation of friends or family joining him, and he'd go through a lot of things, learning new magic and reason to get up in the morning, making friends and enemies, losing a hand as a penalty for dying... Only for something to happen, as they were close to victory...!

And a number of the conscripted Reclaimers, all torn from their own worlds, would wake without memory on an island full of digital-looking glitches. Among them would be Sans... and newly-arrived Papyrus.

Of course, with memories as glitched out as the sea, sky, and trees, the skeleton brothers don't know each other. Sans will recognize a face from one of his photographs, and follows in search of answers, while Papyrus... Well, Papyrus made a pact with a lich during his trip between worlds, an exchange power and knowledge for information and errands. He'll remember his ambitions, his yearning for prestige and popularity, faster than the importance of family. He has magic to master, more powers to gain, and a dog to look out for. It'll be fine.

And sometimes, it's like a very strange dream.

The human came, the human left, with enough dead at their hands that the monsters protested Toriel's claim to the the throne - and Undyne took command. Papyrus and Sans, more interested in friendship than warfare, largely joined the ex-queen in a quiet and unofficial rebellion.

Sans got to spend time with his friend, even bringing her out to Snowdin on occasion, while Papyrus gained a new life goal of parenting any future wayward humans and kept watch. If they had their way, no more humans would leave the Ruins and risk their souls being taken.

To that end, Papyrus began looking at renovating the ruins of Home, in part in hopes that more monsters would feel the same, in parts of having Something To Do. The last he recalls, he'd been in the Ruins looking for the source of a child-like voice...

When he suddenly wakes up, in an unfamiliar bed, in unfamiliar clothes, and an unfamiliar human body. Somehow now he's Papyrus Knochenmus, newly moved to Santa Rosita, part of a family of other confused and displaced people. He'll make the most of it, of course, and even this strangely transformed life on the a surface could be great...!! if it weren't for the outdated technology, social normals, and the creepily violent smilers lurking around them.
