We do stuff that's not working on the symbols, too. [There's an impression of Sans at work, looking through equations and calculations. He doesn't know all the specifics of archeology, though he's picking things up, but math is universal as long as you know the terms and variables being used. It's a different kind of place for Sans's mind, different from the symbols or even the usual constant tick of Sans's normal thoughts. With math--with science--everything aligns toward one task. It's work, but it's peaceful. He's always liked making things click together this way.
As far as the louder whispering, well, Sans usually isn't thinking about thinking about it recursively like this. It does get difficult if he sticks to it for too long, but he's just--used to it. Still, they should really stop thinking about it before they get a headache. (A side effect of the whispering he hasn't mentioned to Papyrus before.)
Sans thinks it's probably worth removing the phone, since if it melts into them, then it might connect Papyrus permanently to the internet, and Sans is still of the opinion that being able to disconnect from it is a good idea when your thoughts might get inadvertently broadcasted to the whole canyon otherwise.]
