[There's a delay before Papyrus responds, or maybe it's just that Sans's phone is lagging? (He's inundating the tracker with queries about the "growling," to which the tracker unhelpfully responds that - lacking a directive to track odd sounds - there's no consistent record to pull on. That's updated.)]
OKAY, I'M NOT FREAKING OUT.
[Because he just did that.]
AM I NOT FREAKING OUT ABOUT GROWLING, OR GROWING. BECAUSE EITHER COULD BE. A CONCERN.
[Sans could elaborate, but he's not going to, at least not right now. Talking about what's going on with him is still pretty difficult. It feels like going against some well-used instinct.]
OKAY, I'M BEGINNING TO UNDERSTAND YOUR FIRST MESSAGE.
[That request not to freak out had an appropriately "fear not" vibe to it, which he's doing his best to follow. It probably helps that his emotions are hovering around 77% of previously measured norms...]
DO YOU WANT ME TO COME HANG OUT??
IF YOU'RE ALL CHECKED OUT ON GETTING CHECKED OUT, I PROMISE NOT TO EAVESDROP ON THE WHISPERS.
sure pretty sure you're safe from hearing anything as long as you don't bring a stethoscope
[Sans will be back home soon enough. He's been trying out his teleportation lately, and it's reliable enough for him to use for travel again. The rest of his magic not so much. There's a lesson here about practice Sans will be ignoring.]
STILL NOT FREAKING OUT: DOES HEARING IT. SEEM TO DO ANYTHING?
[Partly, he's asking if Sans is okay, aside from the shock of weird news. Partly he's asking if there's a doctor experiencing sudden monsterification, or anything similarly alarming. It's a very concerning thing to hear, and doesn't bode anything well for what that nibbled soul might result in, but... At the very least, Papyrus heard some form of whispers secondhand when they were melted, and he doesn't think it's had lasting effects.]
[It better not have been happening this whole time. Instead of thinking about that, Sans is going to go lay on the couch forever, or at least for right now.]
WOW! THAT'S DEFINITELY, A BRIGHT SIDE THAT YOU'RE LOOKING ON! GOOD JOB, I THINK.
[Not one he would suggest, but whatever floats Sans's boat! And mood. And anything else in need of floating.
If Sans has already collapsed on the couch, he'll hear the clattering of things in the kitchen, as Papyrus there immediately on confirming they'd be hanging out.]
and they said i couldn't do it [And they were right; Sans is terrible at optimism.]
[Sans perks up a little at the sound of clattering in the kitchen and rethinks his laying on the couch forever plans. He briefly entertains the idea of teleporting himself and the couch into the kitchen, but he doesn't think there's anywhere in the kitchen to put the couch without breaking something. He guesses he'll walk into the kitchen like a normal person.]
kitchen probably not big and empty enough for that, alas for sans
[That said, he really isn't sure how to spin that... barebones, let's face it - sentiment into something more positive. So he doesn't fuss about doing so beyond shooting off that text, and continuing his work in the kitchen. Sans arrives to the sight of various junk food getting pulled out and arranged, the better to be on a huge platter to bring to the living room.]
add that to the list of potential house renovations
[Sans gets as far as leaning on the doorway of the kitchen. While in general every day that passes since Sans got part of his soul eaten has had Sans looking a tiny bit better, today he looks exhausted all over again. Still, he's not wobbling on his feet. Physically he's still improving, even if mentally he's got something else to worry about.]
[Papyrus startles at the noise, and visibly checks Sans over for signs of stress or pain. That exhaustion is noted, and the lean against the doorway. But at least he's not wobbling, and the mysterious soul sounds aren't audible from the counter.]
...Hey! You're already back. Short notice, I'm throwing a "welcome back from surprise news" party, for you. [It's more Sans-favored food than Papyrus usually touches at once handling groceries, let alone serving. He's concerned, for all the health side of the bill hasn't mentioned any concerns yet, so he's giving a little leeway.]
Great, I love parties. [Sort of. He likes going to parties he can leave whenever he wants, specifically. But parties that are just him and Papyrus where Sans gets to eat a lot of junk food are great no matter what.] Took a shortcut back. It worked out okay.
[Obviously, since Sans is here. Still, it's no secret his magic is part of what needs to recover.]
Glad to see it!! Though, I guess I know where you were... [And Sans surely has him listed as his emergency contact, in the case that he'd fainted while still at the doctor's - which was something of a concern, Papyrus can privately admit to himself. What if Sans had mis-aimed the shortcut and wound up somewhere else, though...? At least the tracker probably could have sent out an alert, if it ever noticed there was a problem.]
Anyway, not that you ever need to, but brace yourself for terrible food! I'm waiving all culinary advice today. [Which is probably not a sign of the end of the world, but who knows.]
[With that amount of junk food, Sans is pretty sure Papyrus is worried about him. Call it a hunch.] Should I go brace myself back on the couch? [You know, for extra bracing power. Even if he did get up and walk over here, he really would rather be on the couch.]
Yeah, unless you don't want to watch this movie I found. [Papyrus is pulling out several of the stops, including another emergency stash entertainment option. They can think about thinking about mystery soul problems later.]
[If Papyrus is providing all these distractions, Sans is absolutely going to take them.] Guess I've gotta now, huh? [He walks back to the couch to drop himself into his usual spot. Maybe he'll get another nap in before he has to answer any difficult questions from anyone about his whole soul thing.]
text; backdated to early april the day sans sees a doctor
but my soul might be growling a little

just growling
and maybe some whispering
[Sans led with the growling because he thinks that might actually be less concerning than the whispering.]

YOU MEAN.
LIKE THE SYMBOLS, WHISPERING?

not really
i can hear it sometimes
didn't know where it was coming from
but it's not doing anything different from when i hear it with the symbols

SO. MAYBE, IT WAS ALREADY HAPPENING,
BUT NOW IT'S EASIER TO HEAR.
[If they get ahold of a stethoscope, Papyrus is going to stick it in his own chest, about where his soul had seemingly been visible for that while.]
GLAD TO HEAR IT'S NOT WORSE!!

sure
at least it's not screaming
